Should we use embryonic stem cells?

Welcome back to another week of Biology!

This week some of you will be completing a Planaria lab while others will be completing some models to talk more about cell differentiation. Last week all of you were exposed to the need of cell division to help grow and heal multicellular organisms. While there are a couple of types of cell division that we have touched upon (asexual vs. sexual), all cells in an organisms composed of many, must know what job or role they will play. For example, our bodies need to have different cells. The cells in our stomach must be specialized enough to withstand the acidic environment of the gastric juices. On the other hand, our eye cells must be specialized enough to capture the different wavelengths of color that radiates from the different objects across the room.
So what is cell differentiation? It is simply when cells decide to become a specific type and they develop characteristics special to their job. For example, a neuron needs to be long and thin, with many dendrites (arm-like extensions) to quickly pass the information from neuron to neuron. After all, your brain needs to work quickly!! As defined by Kumar, in “Textbook of Human Embryology”, cell differentiation “is the process of a cell changing from one cell type to another. Most commonly this is a less specialized type becoming a more specialized type, such as during cell growth.”

(Figure 1: Stem cell can develop into any of the types of cells shown)

These cells that can turn into any of kind of cell, are called stem cells. Stem cells are commonly found in developing embryos. As humans develop during the nine months of gestation, these stem cells differentiate into the many different types of cells that will make your legs, your lungs, your brain and many more.
Stem cells differ from other cells in the body in several ways
1. Stem cells are unspecialised. They have not developed into cells that perform a specific
   function.

2. Stem cells can specialise. They can divide and produce cells that have the potential to become other more specialised cell types or tissues. These new cells and tissues are used to repair or replace damaged or diseased cells in the body.

3. Unspecialised stem cells are capable of self renewal. Stem cells are able to divide and produce many copies of themselves. Many cell types once they have become completely specialised (terminally differentiated) have a limited capacity to produce new cells of the same type. If a mature nerve or blood cell is damaged it cannot replace itself.

4. When stem cells divide, each daughter cell can either: a. stay as a stem cell, or b. the daughter cell can undergo many more cell divisions. With each division the cell becomes more specialised until it finally becomes a terminally specialised cell type. There are many intermediate cell types between the pluripotent stem cell and the final specialised cell type. Stem cells play a critical role in normal growth and development by providing new cells for growth and for replacing and repairing used and damaged tissues. Once stem cells have been obtained from the body they can, in the right conditions, be grown in a laboratory. Scientists can then influence what type of cell a stem cell grows into by adding chemicals to the cell culture or changing how the cells are grown.

Where are we most likely to find these cells? A developing embryo!! Yet the use of embryonic stem cells is rather controversial because this would require the destruction of an embryo.

So let’s take a look at these questions to help you write your post:

  • Does life begin at fertilization, in the womb, or at birth?
  • Is a human embryo equivalent to a human child?
  • Does a human embryo have any rights?
  • Might the destruction of a single embryo be justified if it provides a cure for a countless number of patients?
  • Since ES cells can grow indefinitely in a dish and can, in theory, still grow into a human being, is the embryo really destroyed?

  1. The article "Should we use embryonic stem cells?" examines the idea of using stem cells from embryos. The article uses information to explain that stem cells are a great resource to use for patients who are in need of a transplant. The destruction of the embryo through this process is a key detail that illustrates why the use of these cells is so controversial. Another important idea from the article is that you can use these powerful cells because you can turn them into any organ. The examples and information found in this article emphasize the value of the use of stem cells.

  2. I feel that life begins in whom because many stuff happen there. The process of the child being alive happens there. Also in the whom you can abort the kid. Also there what happens is that the cells start to become something like the heart or the brain. In the article it mention many things about cells being able to become anything in the human body.

    1. i agree with you Jose life dose start in the whom and the whom has cells that decides to become a organ. in other words that they start to become something that the human body needs.I wont say that stuff happen just certain specific roles happen in the whom. you can abort the child in the whom but that would be murder or "killing the baby".

The article "Should we use embryonic stem cells" shows the idea of what stem cells are and what their purpose is. The blog uses information regarding how stem cells can be turned into any cells. This blog also mentions where to find these stem cells in a body. Another important idea from the blog is stem cells can divide as much and they want to. These 'stem cells' are able to convert into any cell they want to. The examples and the information found in this article gives a spotlight to the idea of what stem cells are and where they are in the body (the embryo).

    1. Natalie Mendoza examines that the article shows the idea of what stem cells are and what their purpose is. She explains that this blog shows you could find stem cells in a body. Another information she put that i agree is that stem cells can divide as much as they want. She tells the reader the spotlight to the idea of what stem cells are and where they are in the body. What she means by the body is the embryo.

  4. Joe Amaro,
The article, "Should we use embryonic stem cells?" it talks about embryos. So the questions ask you many topics about embryos. One of the questions said when does life start and well life starts right away in fertilization. I believe this because the newborn is already being made inside the mother. So thats already new life.

    1. I agree with the fact that life starts as soon as fertilization occurs. I'd like to add on that in the womb, for a baby, it takes about 9 months. This is a good example because it takes that long for cell division. starting with one cell that grows to many, then, they choose their function. As a result of that. A full baby is developed.

  5. In the article," Should we use embryonic cells?"it addresses the idea of how cells are different in the way that they choose to have different functions. The article proves this point by using the picture that shows how in the middle there are stem cells. Then those stem cells choose a function such as: muscle, blood, nerve, cardiaic, liver, skin cells, etc. The importance of this is that, if we don't have stem cells then they wouldn't choose a function. If they didn't choose a function them we wouldn't have bodies have regular functions.

    1. Yes the author of this blog uses facts in the article to inform people of the possible chance of stem cells from embryos repairing really damaged cells. The stem cells have the option to become many types of specialized cells or organs. By doing this a problem can rise from this amazing theory. There is a problem with this solution there is the risk of making a deformed child by taking the stem cells it need to form. It may be a baby but it is still a human baby that scientists run the risk of killing.

  7. The article titles "Should we use embryonic stem cells?" introduces the idea of the stem cells from the embryos. The article relies on Kumar, in “Textbook of Human Embryology”,which has facts to describe the processes of how a cell changes to one another to become more specialized in cell growth. How the stem cells develop is essential information that explains how the stem cells can be specialized and changes between the stem cells. Another important idea from the article is the unspecialized stem cells which demonstrates how they divide and produce many copies of their own stem cell copies. The information found in the article support the causes of stem cells being used in the embryo and the affectants of using stem cells

  8. In the article "Should we use embryonic stem cells" the main topic is that with the power of embryonic stem cells scientists can fix up the patients that need help with their defects in their body. When there is an embryo the stem cells become a specialized type of cell that will work in a specific area. But sometime a mutation will occur in the cell and there will either be too much of the type of cell or there will be too little amount of the cells. This is where we get defects on the human body, with this happening the body will look deformed and won't look like the average human body. Stem cells can become any type of cell but at the cost of an embryo's stem cells being taken away from it.

    1. The author addresses the idea of using the power of embryonic stem cells to cure the patients. The author relies on facts to explain how when the stem cells have become specialized ones, they begin to function in a specific area in which they became specialized. The amount of cell mutation is essential information that explains how there can be more and less types of a cell in a specific part which makes it risky to use the embryonic stem cells. Another important idea from author is a key detail which indicates that the amount of the cells matter because it can cause effects such as different looking bodies. The information found in the writing piece support the causes of the stem cells and how they can be any type of cell, but that means putting in harm an embryo stem cell.

  15. I agree with Rosa because the article does talk about missing organs. I agree also that they are used to help other people who don't develop right. It is also used onto people can grow or other stuff and grow properly. I also agree with Rosa in the second question. In the the fertilization because that's when it all starts.
