Welcome to Blogging :)
Because seeing your lovely faces two hours a week, every other day isn't enough, I have decided that we will learn how to interact with one another through blogging. This is a place, specific to the people in our 2B class, where we will discuss the important and big picture issues found in the field of Biology. Please make sure to reference your scientific interactive notebook to figure out how to post to your class blog.
For our first blog, in alignment with the topic of the week, we will be discussing cancer in Hispanic populations. And while you might be like "Wait Ms. Perez, according to our weekly calendar we will be talking about cellular division called mitosis!" Let me tell you how such an important topic can be related to cellular division.
All of our cells complete a specific type of cellular division called MITOSIS. Your cells complete this complicated process to make more IDENTICAL cells. This process allows our bodies to heal and grow. This process is specifically important when you cut yourself and you need new cells to replace the damaged ones.
As you can see from the model it looks like a very organized process, but this does not happen all at once in every cell. While the process itself never changes, the rate at which each cell completes it really depends on their environment.
According to statistics
"Hispanics are the fastest growing demographic group in the United States. Approximately 16.3% of America's population (50.5 million out of 310 million people) is Hispanic. It is estimated that 112,800 people of Hispanic ethnicity will be diagnosed with cancer and 33,200 will die of the disease in 2012."
So how do cancer and mitosis relate to one another?
Well cancer takes place when cells continue to carry out this processes without any kind of control. That's right something as simple as not knowing when or how many times to carry out mitosis is what can result in cancer in our bodies. So how does this happen? And why is this relevant in our communities?
Well there is very little information about cancer in our communities. And in order for us to understand how cancer works, we really need to understand how mitosis is relevant to our everyday lives.

DeleteWhen cancer utilizes the process of of mitosis, it is a very scary thing. Since mitosis reproduces identical cells, when cancer cells go through mitosis it is spreading more cancer throughout the body. Cancer spreads at a expedited rate and I would assume it would speed up its mitosis rate so that cancer spreads so quick. When reading this blog I understood the connection between cancer cells and mitosis and after reading this blog, I now believe cancer cells spread throughout the body so fast because the disease accelerates the process of mitosis, which is the division of cells resulting in two newly replicated cells. More cancer cells are being produced because of mitosis being increased to a rapid rate and this has changed my stance on mitosis because it isn't always a positive process.
ReplyDeleteI also forgot to add reasoning to why cancer can expedite mitosis. Since cancer causes cells to function with no control, there is no control on how fast the mitosis process goes resulting in a higher speed because there is nothing to keep it in check
DeleteThe author states the idea of how mitosis reproduces cells and how it is really serious. The author relies on information from the article "Cancer among Hispanic populations" to support his idea about cancer being spread all over the body and mitosis spreading cancer quick. Mitosis speeding up cancer is a key detail that explains the process of how cancer spreads through out the human body faster that it makes it hard to cure. Another important idea from the author is essential information which indicates that as mitosis is being increased more disease is spreading and harming the Hispanic population. The information found from the author emphasize the causes of cancer being spread throughout the population fast.
DeleteYour comment really does support your reasoning as this is all very much true. Mitosis can be dangerous if certain requirements are met to destroy your body. Like you say "Since mitosis reproduces identical cells, when cancer cells go through mitosis it is spreading more cancer throughout the body. But yes this process has no brakes when it needs to have some. If it wasn't for mitosis never stopping then millions of lives would still alive right now if they didn't lose the fight to cancer. As I said in my comment "... mitosis is a double edged sword than can help us or hurt us if we get infected with cancer".
DeleteThe comment by Daniel addresses the process of mitosis. He brought up that cancer spreads at a expedited rate . I agree with what he says because that is true it does spread very fast. He also said that he believes that cancer cells can spread very fast throughout the whole body. I also agree with him when he says that.
DeleteDear scholars,
DeleteWhile I largely agree with Daniel and Sol, I need you guys to understand that controlled mitosis is necessary for growth. Unfortunately, when this process happens without any controls, then anyone can end up developing cancer.
The blog by Perez titled "Cancer among Hispanic Populations" introduces the importance of the cancer spreading throughout Hispanics and the population is growing. The blog "Cancer among Hispanic Populations" cites facts that explain how many people will be diagnosed with cancer as the disease spreads over the years. Cancer spreading through populations is a key detail that suggest people are not having their cells spread correctly since the disease is causing many effects to the cells and the Hispanic populations. Another important idea from the blog "Cancer Among Hispanic populations" is a powerful example which indicates that people need to understand the importance of mitosis and its process of getting cancer disease. The information found in the article by Perez confirm the need for the importance of mitosis and how it can affect peoples daily life.
ReplyDeleteThe author is stating that cancer and mitosis can relate to each other. To add on,the mitosis cycle can lead to cancer if the process is disrupted or not done correctly.Cell division can have negative effects on health issues.
DeleteThe author is stating that cancer and mitosis can relate to each other. To add on,the mitosis cycle can lead to cancer if the process is disrupted or not done correctly.Cell division can have negative effects on health issues.
DeleteSol I largely agree with your statement, with the exception that I need you to understand that mitosis is necessary for everyone. When cancer happens, tumors can develop as a result of the uncontrolled mitosis taking place. The creation of tumors can spread to the rest of the body.
DeleteMitosis is the same thing as cell division. Mitosis is important for the human body because it helps when you have a cut on your body. Cells carry out waste products but when mitosis does not occur, everything will be slowed down. Mitosis helps you heal and grow when you cannot on your own. Mitosis is the creation of identical cells throughout your entire body. Cancer takes place when mitosis continues without any control. Cancer spreads throughout the body as well as mitosis does in your body. The value of mitosis is important for scientists and our body.
ReplyDeleteThe author Natalie writes that mitosis is the same thing as cell division. Natalie describes that mitosis helps you when you have a cut and you begin to bleed. Natalie states that cancer takes place when mitosis continues without any control. The same way mitosis spreads through your body cancer does the same
DeleteThe author natalie addrsses the idea of the atricl very good in depth.Natalie describes the facts about mitosis. Natalie also describes when mitosis continues with any control. I like it, keep it up.
DeleteDear Natalie, while I see that you really addressed the task, you did not use the frames provided. I would love for you to use them next time.
DeleteSo what I read was about biology. It was talking about mitosis and cell division. This blog talks about cancer among Hispanic people. In this blog it also talks about how Hispanic people grow huge in this country. It explains that cancer is in cells and it grows without any control.
ReplyDeleteThe author Joe Amaro addresses the idea of mitosis. He addresses how cancer is among Hispanic cultures. He also talks about how Hispanics are in the United States and about how cells grow with no control.
DeleteThe author Joe Amaro addresses the idea of the stages of mitosis. He addressed how cancer is among Hispanic cultures. He also talks about how the importance of cell division and cell growth. He also Talks about how cells grow with no control.
DeleteThe author joe amaro talks abouts the mitosis. The blog relies and how hispanic culture will get cancer. Joe amaro explains how hispanic people grow in the country. Another important from the blog is he tells us what hispanics do.. The examples give me a better idea about mitosis.
DeleteJoe, I think you may have misinterpreted the blog. Please do me a favor and go back and read it. I think if you give it a read again and you use the frames provided on page 6. If you have any questions let me know!
DeleteIn the article it states that many people are getting cancer. It also it mention that what was the difference between with cancer and mitosis. And the difference is that one keeps you alive and the other one kills you. A way they relate is that they are both growing by cell division. Another important idea from the article is that is that when a cell goes out of control. Also it stated that you can get cancer by not knowing how much mitosis you use.
ReplyDeleteJose Barreto
I agree with this statement because of the idea that cancer spreads with the use of cell division. Since cell division is recreating two exact copies of the cell dividing and cancer causing loss of control, Cell division of a cancer cells is producing a high amount of cancer cells and I now believe that is also another reason why there is more cancer cells than normal cells when a body has the malignant ailment, So I agree with you Jose that cancer grows with cell division
DeleteJose while I agree that you have a sense of what the article was talking about, you did not use the academic language provided. I would love if next time you used the frames and you asked me if you have any questions. From reading your post, I am not sure whether you understand the relationship between mitosis and cancer.
DeleteThe blog introduces the importance of mitosis. The article examines the diagram and the stages of mitosis. The article uses facts to discuss the importance of mitosis.Another important idea from the article is that the emphasizing value of mitosis. The examples confirm how mitosis is essential for our living. DeleteEmmanuel while I really appreciate your use of the sentence frames, the lack of details makes me question whether you really read the article. In order for you to really dig into the depth of the content you need to really engage with the content. Let's try again next week.
DeleteThe blog titled "Cancer among Hispanic Populations" examines how cancer relates to mitosis, a process that can divide it's genetic information into clones of itself. Cancer can affect this by a mutation taking place in the cell's nucleus and when mitosis occurs on the mutated cell another mutated cell is created. But this does not activate when needed like normal, this is constantly happening without control the functions of the cell. In the blog above there is a different type of color on the part that says "According to statistics" where some information is cited from. I would like to know from where these statistics you got your information from, in other words from what site did you cite this from. "This process allows our bodies to heal and grow." This information is very important that is very necessary in everyone's daily life. Without this process in our bodies we would be dead because our cells die daily and new one's are being created right now to replace the dead one's. If so then our skin would would be rotting this very moment. The information that was found in the blog "Cancer Among Hispanic Populations" emphasize the fact that our process of mitosis can be a double edged sword to help us and hurt us if we get infected with cancer.- Miguel Gamino
ReplyDeleteThe author Miguel Gamino explains how cancer and mitosis connect. His controlling idea supports the fact that when mitosis occurs , a identical replica of a cell is formed. In addition to this, he states that cancer damages the cell's nucleus gets damaged and the DNA gets damaged as well. This leads to cancer. To conclude, Miguel states that the cause of cancer is the result of a damaged cell.
DeleteMiguel supports the relationship between cancer and mitosis. He uses information to support how cancer cells and mitosis are related to each other. "Cancer can affect this by a mutation taking place in the cell's nucleus and when mitosis occurs on the mutated cell another mutated cell is created." he shows how cancer cells reproduce. Miguel uses information to support his idea about how mitosis and cancer are related.
DeleteMiguel, I truly enjoyed how you took the sentence frames and made them yours. And to answer your question, your body sheds million of skin cells on a daily basis. This is why you need to wash your sheets frequently! You don't want to sleep in your own dead skin cells!
DeleteThe blog titled " Cancer Among Hispanic population " introduces us to the topic mitosis. The blog gives us information about how the steps work and what happens during the process. One key detail that she gave us was " Hispanics are the fastest growing demographic group in the United States." Another important fact was that " 50.5 million out of 310 million people are Hispanic". These examples just shows that there are more Mexicans out there. - Hailey Quintero
ReplyDeleteWho is this?
DeleteWhile I see that you used the sentence frames, I am not sure you understood the main topic of the blog. What is the post really about?

ReplyDeleteThe blog titled "Cancer Among Hispanic Population" addresses the idea of the stability of cancer cells among Hispanic people. The blog "Cancer Among Hispanic Population" uses facts and statistics to support that 112,800 people will be diagnosed with cancer and in addition to this 33,200 will die. The fact that 33,200 hispanic people will die is an essential example of cancer powering through the hispanic population. Another important idea from the blog is that mitosis is a part of cancer taking over a person because a person cancer happens when the process of mitosis grows wrong. These examples from the blog "Cancer Among Hispanic Population" supports the fact that hispanics have a cancer background.
Blogger Cain Conde address that 33,200 will die because of cancer. He also stated that 33,200 people dieing is a lot and it can affect our population. Also on how cancer and mitosis is affecting many people. Also he talks about hispanic and them having cancer.- Jose Barreto
DeleteThe blogger Cain supports the stability of cancer cells among hispanic people. The blogger is also able to use information that describes on how mitosis is part of cancer taking over a person because cancer happens when mitosis grows wrong. He is also able to use key detail from the article "Cancer Among Hispanic Population" which is that 33,200 hispanic people will die is am essential example of cancer. He is able to explain how cancer and mitosis is an important topic.
Delete"ther important idea from the blog is that mitosis is a part of cancer taking over a person because a person cancer happens when the process of mitosis grows wrong."
DeleteCain I think this sounds very much like a run on sentence. I need you to be really professional when it comes to academic writing!

ReplyDeleteThe Blog introduces the topic of Mexicans being the fastest growing demographic group in the united states. The Blog uses evidence to say that an estimated gues of 112,200 Mexicans will be diagnosed with cancer. That explains that cancer spreads fast. Another important idea is that it will say 33,300 will die by having cancer. The information confirms that cancer spreads quick.
Nick while I really like the information you chose to highlight, I am wondering if you truly understood the post. What is really the main idea?
DeleteThe article about cancer cells on Hispanics examines the idea of the relationship between cancer and mitosis. In the picture it shows a cell dividing into two, through the process of interphase, early prophase, late profase, metaphase, anaphase, telophase and then interphase. These stages are important because then the cell wouldn't function correctly. The reasons for this is to that, our bodies can heal and grow. This is important so that we can grow and we don't stay like midgets.
ReplyDelete-Julie Garcia
Love the information you chose to highlight, but I think you really did not use the frames. Lets try that next time!
DeleteThis blog talks about mitosis & cell division. It talks about how cancer is in cells and can grow without control. Also mitosis helps when you have a cut in your body it helps it heal
ReplyDeleteLeo, I really think that you need to take a look at the blogging rubric and requirements. You guys had a total of thirty minutes, and you only have two and a half sentences to show for your work.
DeleteThe blog titled " Cancer cells among Hispanic population" examines the relationship between cancer and mitosis. The importance of this blog was to demonstrate that since the Hispanics are the fastest growing demographic in the U.S. they have an bigger advantage in having cancer. Another important fact from the blog was that cancer and the process of mitosis are related to one another. The information found in the article supports that if mitosis is not processing without any control then cancer will take place. So, since the population has a wide amount of Hispanics, Hispanics would be more commonly known to have cancer. The blog suggest that to understand how cancer develops you need to exemplify how mitosis works. The information found in the blog reinforce the value of importance of mitosis and cancer.
ReplyDeleteThis comment examines the main idea of the article on Cancer Among Hispanic Populations. The information given in the article proves that cancer can not occur without mitosis. A fun idea is that cancer develops this idea. The link between the article and this comment is mitosis and cancer on Hispanics. I also like how the comment is adresed very highly.

@DanielSanchez i totally agree with your statement because the process of mitosis and the fact that cancer utilizes it is indeed a very scary thing. It's crazy how fast cancer spreads around all your body. The way cells divide totally gives cancer cells so much more energy to divide all over your body since they're already so powerful."And in order for us to understand how cancer works, we really need to understand how mitosis is relevant to our everyday lives." this quote means that mitosis is what increases cancer cells to divide faster.
